Americans celebrated Independence Day this week, a day to sport our “stars and stripes” anywhere and everywhere. It is a day of gratitude for our founding fathers who established our country in the loving fear of God.
We also reflect on the faith of these founders, whose reliance on the Almighty was all-pervasive—both privately and publicly. Here, in a portion of the Declaration of Independence, we see as much a declaration of spiritual dependence as political independence! How beautiful a statement on which to build a nation!
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do … declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States…. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
